How to choose an online Quran academy for your child

Checked 2026-10-23 · Updated 2026-10-23 · By Online Quran Learnings

The short answer

Check seven things before you pay: who supervises the lesson, whether it is recorded and who keeps the recording, how teachers are checked, what the free trial is, whether your child keeps the same teacher, the price of one lesson, and the refund terms in writing.

Then check one thing for your country: most online Quran teachers live abroad, so a UK DBS check, an Australian Working with Children Check or New Zealand Police vetting usually does not cover them. Ask what the academy does instead.

Online Quran Learnings publishes this page. Facts about other academies come from their own websites, read on 23 October 2026 and listed under Sources. Policies change, so ask the academy and get the answer in writing. Spot an error? Tell us.

Where we fit: we publish this guide and are one of the academies in it, so we do not rank anyone. Our own answers are in the last column of the checklist. Jump to your country ↓

What should I check before I choose an online Quran academy?

Seven checks, what to ask, and our own answer
CheckWhy it mattersAsk the academyOur answer
SupervisionA third adult in the lesson protects your child and the teacher. Is anyone else in every lesson? Who?A female supervisor joins every lesson live.
RecordingsA recording lets you hear a lesson again, but only if the academy, not the teacher, keeps it.Is it recorded? Who records, where is it kept, who can watch?Every lesson is recorded by the academy, on its own Google Meet (the academy’s Google Workspace account). Parents can watch their child’s recordings through the academy’s CRM.
Teacher checksLocal police checks rarely cover teachers abroad.Where do teachers live, and what do you check before they teach? Our teachers are mostly based in Egypt, the UAE, India and Pakistan. We check every teacher’s ID and certificates before they teach, and a female supervisor joins every class.
Free trialTrials range from one class to a week. How many days or classes, and do you need my card?3-day free trial, no card.
Same teacherChildren settle with one teacher. Will my child keep the same teacher every week? Who covers? The same teacher every week; you can change teacher with no reason needed.
Price per lessonMonthly prices hide the real cost. What is the full monthly fee per child, and is there a registration fee? From £25, $30, C$53, A$30 or NZ$53 a month per child; no enrolment fee.
RefundsYou need to know what happens if it does not work out. What do I get back after the first paid month?Ask within 5 calendar days of the first paid class for a full refund. After that, attended classes are deducted and the rest is refunded.

Prices per country, for us and 15 other academies: 2026 prices by country.

Then sit in on the trial. Watch whether the teacher corrects gently, whether your child understands the explanations, and whether anyone else is in the lesson.

What should I ask an online Quran academy before I pay?

  • Is every lesson one-to-one, with the same teacher each week?
  • Who else is in the lesson, and can I join live without telling you first?
  • Who records the lessons, where are the recordings kept, for how long, and who can watch them?
  • Can the teacher message my child directly, outside class?
  • Where do your teachers live, and what checks happen before they teach?
  • Who do I tell if something worries me, and what happens next?
  • What is the full monthly fee per child, and what is refunded if we stop?

A good academy answers plainly and in writing. For a longer list and eight academies compared, see online Quran academies for kids, compared. Our own answers are on our child safety page.

How to choose an online Quran academy in the UK

  • DBS checks. A DBS check covers people with a UK criminal record history. If a teacher lives abroad, a DBS check usually tells you nothing, so ask what the academy checks instead and who else is in the lesson.
  • After-school times. Most UK families book between 4pm and 8pm. Ask whether the slot stays put when the clocks change (25 October 2026 and 28 March 2027).
  • Prices. £20 to £38 a month per child for two lessons a week at the UK academies we checked (UK prices).

What UK academies publish: The Quran Hour says staff “pop in” to lessons from time to time for safeguarding and that teachers are vetted. LiveQuranLessons says a female supervisor is on every class and that it never records. eQuranSchool lets parents sit in and does not record. Learn Quran Centre and Online Qurann publish a 3-day free trial; we found no supervision or recording policy on their pages.

How to choose an online Quran academy in the USA

  • Background checks. A US background check only covers a teacher with a US record history. Ask where teachers live and what the academy checks.
  • Time zones. Eastern evenings fill first. Ask for a slot in your own zone and what happens when the clocks change (1 November 2026 and 14 March 2027).
  • Prices. US$34 to US$44.99 a month for two lessons a week (US prices).

What academies publish for US families: Al Tahoor Quran Institute says every teacher passes a background check and parents can sit in. TarteeleQuran says it runs “thorough background checks” and checks references. Quran In Depth offers a free 30-minute evaluation. Shaykhi’s pages give one or two free trial classes.

How to choose an online Quran academy in Canada

  • Police checks. A Canadian police check with vulnerable sector screening covers people with a Canadian record. Ask what the academy does for teachers abroad.
  • Lesson length. Check the minutes: Online Quran Classes Canada uses 25-minute lessons; most others use 30.
  • Prices. C$42 to C$54 a month for two lessons a week (Canadian prices). Check the currency: one academy we found shows prices with no currency named.

What academies publish for Canadian families: Al Mehdi Center lists a criminal record check, an interview and a 3-month probation for teachers, and keeps recordings in Microsoft Teams. LiveQuranLessons publishes Canadian-dollar prices and a female supervisor on every class.

How to choose an online Quran academy in Australia

  • Working with Children Checks. Each state runs its own check for people working with children there. A teacher abroad usually does not hold one, so ask what the academy does instead.
  • Daylight saving. NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT change their clocks (until 4 April 2027); Queensland, WA and the NT do not. Ask for your slot in your own state’s time.
  • Prices. A$36 to A$59 a month for two lessons a week (Australian prices).

What Australian academies publish: Aus Online Quran Academy lists identity and reference checks and a supervised trial period, and says lessons are not recorded or stored by the academy. Online Quran Classes Australia offers session recordings for revision and a 1-week free trial. TarteeleQuran has a separate Australian site with Australian-dollar prices.

How to choose an online Quran academy in New Zealand

  • Police vetting. New Zealand Police vetting covers people with a New Zealand record. Ask what an academy with teachers abroad checks instead.
  • Times. Most families book after school, 3:30pm to 8pm. New Zealand daylight time runs until 4 April 2027.
  • Prices. NZ$45 to NZ$69 a month for two lessons a week (New Zealand prices).

What academies publish for New Zealand families: NZ Quran Academy prices in New Zealand dollars with a 15% sibling discount and says students get their own recordings where applicable. Al Mehdi Center states a 10% New Zealand discount. Online Quran Classes Australia also publishes New Zealand-dollar prices.

Where other academies publish more than we do

  • Several academies publish a sibling discount (10% to 20%). We have none: each child has their own fee.
  • Al Mehdi Center and Al Tahoor publish criminal record or background checks for teachers. We check ID and certificates and watch a demo class, but we do not claim a police check.
  • LiveQuranLessons and Al Mehdi Center offer more free trial classes (up to 3 and 5).
  • Some academies publish Hifz lessons of 45 or 60 minutes; ours are 30 minutes.

How do I choose an online Quran academy for my child?

Check who supervises the lesson, who records it and keeps the recording, how teachers are checked, the free trial, whether your child keeps the same teacher, the price per lesson and the refund terms. Then sit in on the trial.

Do online Quran teachers need a DBS check?

A DBS check covers people with a UK record. Most online Quran teachers live abroad, so it usually does not apply. Ask what the academy checks instead and who else is in the lesson.

Should online Quran lessons be recorded?

If they are, the academy, not the teacher, should keep the recording, and you should know who can watch it and for how long. Some academies record every lesson and some never record; ask why.

Is a free trial class enough to decide?

It shows how the teacher works with your child. Sit in, watch the corrections, and ask the questions on this page before you pay for a month.

Which online Quran academy is best for kids?

No academy suits every family. Use the checklist, compare the price per lesson in your currency, and choose the one that answers plainly and in writing.
