The short answer
A child is ready to move from Noorani Qaida to the Quran when they can read a line they have not seen before, steadily and without guessing, and apply the vowels, sukoon and shaddah on their own. Finishing the last page of the book is not enough by itself.

Signs your child is ready
- Reads a new line slowly but correctly.
- Holds long vowels for the right length.
- Says sukoon and shaddah without being reminded.
- Does not mix up similar sounds.
- Does not need to see the teacher’s finger on every word.
What the first weeks of Quran reading look like
Most children start with the short surahs at the end of the Quran, or with the first pages of the Quran, reading slowly. The teacher keeps fixing small mistakes. Reading speed comes later, on its own.
What if they move too early?
They may start guessing, and mistakes get repeated until they stick. If that happens, a few weeks back on the Qaida is quicker than fixing habits later.
Quick questions
Should my child start Tajweed straight after the Qaida?

Which surahs come first?
Usually the short surahs at the end of the Quran, starting with Al-Fatihah. See our list of short surahs for kids.
