The short answer
At four, a child can learn the Arabic letters and their sounds, a few short surahs by listening, and simple duas. Lessons should be short and fun, with lots of praise. Expect slow, steady progress. A 30-minute one-to-one class two or three times a week is plenty.

What a 4-year-old can do
- Say the letters and their sounds
- Point to letters on the page
- Recite Al-Fatihah and a few short surahs by listening
- Say Bismillah and simple duas
What helps at this age
- A warm, patient teacher
- Colourful pages, like our OQLS Qaida
- Sitting with a parent for the first few classes
- A class time before they get tired
- Two or three minutes of practice on other days
