The short answer

Give one main idea per surah, in a sentence your child understands. Al-Ikhlas: “Allah is One, and nothing is like Him.” An-Nas: “We ask Allah to keep us safe from bad whispers.” A simple story or example helps. Word-by-word translation can wait until they are older.

Explaining what a surah means to a young child: a guide for parents from Online Quran Learnings

One idea per surah

  • Al-FatihahWe thank Allah and ask Him to show us the right way.
  • Al-IkhlasAllah is One, and nothing is like Him.
  • Al-FalaqAllah protects us from harm in the dark and from jealousy.
  • An-NasAllah protects us from bad whispers.
  • Al-KawtharAllah gives good things, so we pray and thank Him.

Tips

  • Explain after they can recite it, not before.
  • Use their world: “like when you feel scared at night…”
  • Ask them to tell you the idea back.
  • Add more detail each year.

For older children, translation and tafseer classes go deeper.
