The short answer

Teach salah in stages. Let your child pray beside you first, just copying. Then teach the positions, then Al-Fatihah and a short surah, then the other words like the tashahhud. The Prophet ﷺ told parents to teach children to pray at seven, so most children learn the full prayer between 6 and 10.

Tips from teachers

  • Praise every try. Corrections can wait.
  • Use a small prayer mat that is “theirs”.
  • Explain one word a week, so they know what they say.
  • Keep it calm. Salah should feel safe, not scary.

In our Islamic studies classes, the teacher watches your child practise on camera and fixes small things kindly.
