The Rights Of The Quran | A Muslim’s Sacred Trust
The Holy Quran is more than just a book; it is a divine message, a source of guidance and a healing for our hearts. It is the very Word of Allah, revealed to Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) as a mercy to all of humanity. As Muslims, our relationship with The Quran is a sacred trust and this trust comes with certain responsibilities. Just a close friend has rights over us, so too does The Quran. Fulfilling these rights is akey part of our faith.
Here are the primary rights The Quran has upon every Muslim :
1. Belief & Reverence
The first right is to truly believe in The Quran as the unadulterates, final revelation from Allah (SWT). This belief means acknowledge that every word is the truth, without any doubt. We must treat The Quran with the utmost respect, keeping it in a clean place and handling it with reverence.
Allah (SWT) says in The Quran :
“ Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran and indeed, We will be its Guardian.“ (Quran 15:9)
This verse assures us that The Quran has been perfectly preserved and our duty is to accept it with complete faith.
2. Recitation & Proper Pronunciation
The Quran was revealed in a specific, beautiful way and it is our duty to Recite it as correctly as possible. This involves learning Tajweed, the rules of proper pronunciation.
The Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) said :
“ The one who is proficient in the Recitation of The Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes (angels), and the one who Recites The Quran and stumbles while Reciting and finds it difficult, will have two rewards“ (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith shows that even if we struggle, our effort is highly rewarded. The goal is to make a sincere effort to read it clearly and beautifully.
3. Understanding & Reflection
Beyond reciting the words, The Quran has a right to be understood. It is a book of guidance and we can only be guided by what we comprehend. We are encouraged to reflect on its verses (Tadabbur), pondering their meaning and how they apply to our lives.
Allah (SWT) Says :
“ Then do they not reflect upon the Quran? Or are there locks upon (their) hearts?“ (Quran 47:24)
This verse is a powerful reminder that our hearts can remain locked if we do not try to understand the message.
4. Action & Implementation
This is arguably the most important right. The Quran is not meant to be a historical text or just for beautiful Recitation; it is a guide for daily life. We must act upon its teachings by obeying Allah’s command and staying away from what He Has forbidden.
The Prophet Muhammad’s (P.B.U.H) wife Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her), when asked about his character, said :
“ His character was The Quran.“ (Sahih Muslim)
This means he lived by its every teaching and we must strive to do the same.
5. Spreading & Teaching
The final right is to share the Quran’s message with others. As a universal guide, its wisdom is meant for everyone. Whether we teach its Recitation or simply live by its example, we are fulfilling this great responsibility.
The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) said :
“ The best among you are those who learn The Quran and teach it“ (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This noble act allows us to carry the light of The Quran and share its blessings with others.
Conclusion
The Quran is an immense blessing and a mercy to humanity. By honoring its rights, by believing in it, Reciting it beautifully, understanding its meaning, acting upon its commands and sharing its wisdom, we can build a profound and lasting connection with the divine. Let us make a renewed commitment to our sacred trust, for in fulfilling the rights of The Quran, we find guidance, peace and eternal reward.
